Often, educators are not the ones who determine their own online training needs. It is usually decided at the top by administrators, planned for by middle management, and then executed by consultants or those with technological expertise. When this occurs, then training becomes tangential and is not fulsomely embraced by the Faculty for whom it is planned. The reality, however, is that the Faculty, themselves, have clear ideas about what is required for them to build their capacity to better equip themselves and their students with the requisite 21st Century skills.
To address this issue, the voices of Faculty need to be valued for institutions to build strong, resilient training for online education that is responsive and relevant. Using the case of Faculty from a Caribbean community college, the matter of authentic, contextual training will be explored as a viable option for educators to build their capacity in and for online teaching and learning. This, it will be argued, is the way and wave of the future of teacher education and teacher development.
